VDOT Potomac Mills Rd over I-95NW Ramp 2012

Structure Jacking & Load Transfers / Bearing Replacements

The 3 span overpass bridge built in the 70’s suffering from extensive corrosion of the girder bearings and substructure concrete due to leaky expansion joints and de-icing salt use. The repair project included substructure repair and waterproofing, replacing the beridge bearings by new Neoprene bearings as well as closing the intermediate deck expansion joints before a new latex overlay. OTB Contracting was hired to design and implement the bridge jacking and bearing replacement operations required by VDOT. Due to the short time provided and winter time, the bridge was jacked in two stages after joint closure and overlay and a total of 48 bridge bearings were replaced. Gunite concrete repairs and substructure waterproofing were also part of the scope performed.
