WMATA Cheverly Bridge Realignment & Bearing Replacement

Structure Jacking & Load Transfers

The Cheverly Aerial structure western abutment suffered a displacement of nearly 16” due to an adjacent general slope failure. This condition put a serious kink in the rail alignment and seriously damaged the bearings of the end span. OTB Contracting was hired by the GC on the basis of a Design/Build solution for the jacking and lateral displacement of the span in order to return it to the initial alignment. The old bearings were disposed and replaced by new spherical bearings, bridge girders were trimmed with plasma to re-create the expansion gap, new stiffeners added as well as the repair of the deck edge chipped to unlock the span and the installation of new expansion joints.
